Earth, Water, Air, Fire
2001
Earth, Water, Air, Fire is a textile series that experiments with materials and multi-layered weaving. The series explores how various meanings can be constructed through the use of the same set of materials and techniques. The interplay of materials, layers and colours formed the representations of the four classical
elements: earth, water, air and fire. According to Aristotle, these elements arise from the interplay of the properties of hotness and coldness, and dryness and wetness. Fire (dry and hot) and water (wet and cold) are opposites, as are earth (dry and cold) and air (wet and hot).
The series has been shown in “Earth, Water, Wind, Fire and Myself”, a solo exhibition at Ikkuna Gallery, Helsinki, Finland, June 2001.
