Remembered & Forgotten
2024–2025
In “Remembered & Forgotten'”, I transform deeply personal memories into intricate knotted paper sculptures. Working with black and white paper string, I draw on my decade-long exploration of knotting patterns developed through a collaborative research project with mathematicians, merging craft with mathematical tiling theory (see an article or an interview about the research project).
The work conceptually reflects on my relationship with my father as he lived with Alzheimer’s disease. As his memory faded and recognition slipped away, I confronted the inevitability of my own forgetting. I turned to the ordinary objects that had once connected us – briefcase, ice cream cone, pen – as vessels for memory. Each piece was recreated at life scale through thousands of hand-tied knots, their fragile yet enduring structures embodying both the persistence and fragility of recollection.
